Thursday morning 4 am Brisbanites woke early in anticipation of a record flood level
Thankfully, God must be a Queenslander.....our beautiful river peaked at 4.62 instead
of the expected 5.5m level which would have devastated so many more homes and businesses.
The city suffered with water through many suburbs that border the river as well as the CBD and
the Southbank areas.
Many suburbs are still cut off without power and major infra structure is in needi of major repair.
or replacement ..or never to be seen again (riverwalk new farm?....)
Magnificent riverfront homes lost pontoons, boats ...but thankfully no loss of life.
Where does Brisbane go from here......clean up time....fantastic community spirit....Queenslanders coming together!!
More updates to come.......PS.....a big big thankyou to our fantastic emergency service volunteers and workers..police,
ambos,firefighters,ses....you know who you are....THANK YOU!..THANK YOU!...THANK YOU!!!
On Wednesday Brisbane prepared for some of the worst possible floods in its history.
Possible levels of 5.5m were predicted...as many as 40,000 properties could be flood effected.
An eerie and surreal atmosphere encompassed the city as the sun finally appeared after days
and days of rain.....whilst all the time the river gathered monemtum and was rising all the time.
People were packing and moving as much as they could to higher ground. Some suburbs went
into permanent power black out mode in the morning with more homes losing power as the flood waters
from the river and creeks crept into suburban streets.
Brisbane CBD went into blackout as authorities took precautions to ensure public safety.
By lunchtime every safe vantage point of the river was taken up by anxious onlookers absolutely
awestruck by the power and savagery of the rivers surge. Logs, trees, shrubs, fridges, outdoor
furniture, pontoons, kayaks, boats....floated serenely by.....and the landmark riverwalk connecting
the city and New Farm started to breakup.
Brisbane to suffer its worst floods in 36 years.....worst than 1974!
Wivenhoe Dam at 200% capacity...it can no longer hold the flood waters back.
Inner city suburbs are getting deluged with flood waters and prediction is there is worst to
come in the next 48 hours with waters to be higher than 1974 when Brisbane was devastated.
Businesses are being evacuated from the CBD as this is written.
Sadly 9 people are already dead and many more missing.
These photos are just the beginning....sadly there will be worse to come.
As we are doing this posting the rain is coming down....again!!!!!!!!!!
Times like these show what we are made of......Aussie mateship is really needed in Queenslands darkest hour.
